By the end of this post, you will hate me for doing this and kick yourself for not thinking of this earlier.
- Always leave likes, no matter what! Doesn’t matter if you read the post or not, the mere fact that you laid your eyes on it warrants a like. Just make sure you don’t like a lot of the same person’s posts in succession, that would make you look like a tool. Just like a couple of posts and move on, that’s enough to get your name on that coveted notifications list and also to suggest that you read the posts.
- The above point has a drawback though. After a few “like campaigns” WordPress temporarily bans you from liking any posts for a few hours but there’s a workaround to this. Do the good ol’ blog hopping and start liking comments. This is a bit of a danger area though. Comment likers are massively looked down upon for cheating their way into your notifications list and lose you some “respected blogger” points. Hence, just like the comments that look meaningful, and just one or two per author. The author will not only appreciate you for reading the post and getting into the comments section but also for interacting within the comments section.
- Award posts are a massive steal. Always comment “Congratulations, well deserved” without even looking further than the title of the post. The author will most definitely thank you for the appreciation and think that you’re a sincere fella that reads and comments on people’s posts. Welp, looks like you gained a new follower right there without even any effort.
- Follow people en masse. If you’re worried that’s gonna clog up your email, just turn off email notifications for new posts. Some people say that you shouldn’t follow everyone. Just follow a few people in your niche and topics of interest, I feel that’s a bunch of crap. There is no reason a political blog run by a 54 year old man cannot follow a fashion blog run by a petite 22/F. Following a lot of topics can help you discover new interests. (only in case you stop liking and start reading)
- Appreciate everything. It doesn’t matter if the post has crap grammar, no structure and you can’t make head or tails out of it. Some posts are so bad they can literally make you throw up. But all you gotta do is wipe that mom’s spaghetti off your sweater and comment something like “Wow, this post is so amazingly well written. It changed my life. I’ll never look at [Insert topic here] the same way again.”
- In the end, be yourself. So what if you don’t read every post that shows up on your reader? So what if you can’t comment on every post that asks a question? The real key to unlocking WordPress glory is being yourself. Be honest, be truthful, but only when you get caught. Until then, fake sincerity as much as you can. As they say, fake it till you make it.
Are you guilty of any of the above? Tell me in the comments section below. Also, share some of your own tips for blogging newbies. If you liked the post (no pun intended), do comment “Wow, this post is so amazingly well written. It changed my life. I’ll never look at blog advice posts the same way again.”
Much love,
–SG
Well you caught me right there 😅 I wonder who on WordPress is not guilty of well meaning practices?!

Some of the kind souls with amazingly written posts yet still less than a hundred followers are perhaps.
The point is, getting followers/likes is too easy over here. A lot of people use it to stroke their ego, some just do it for the shits and giggles.
Judge each post by its literary merit and not by the number of likes or comments on it.

Quite true but it’s rare to find such blogs these days until and unless they’re just starting out.
True, but it’s not as easy as it sounds. It does involve a lot of time and effort to make people drop by your blog.
Well, these days, I don’t like a post until I read it and mostly when I read something to the very end, it’s obvious that I have something to say about it. And there begins a healthy conversation which with time helps build a community of supportive bloggers.
Besides, at the end of the day, likes/follows are not going to get one very far.

Rightly said.
The way you go about it, you will get a stream of genuinely interested people. Even a 10% engagement is pretty good in my opinion i. e. 10 people reading your post from every 100 of your followers.

Well said. It does take a lot of time, and we don’t have a limited supply of it, but I do my best. I appreciate comments, so comments are what I often leave on other blogs. “Likes” are just a little extra.

LOLZ ! I too wondered whats this about casual likes .Do people really read and like or is it mutual exchange of likes ?Maybe a healthy conversation / comment gives some insight . All i can say is that i have a few genuine readers and guess i will continue posting whatever comes to my mind .And as for other blog posts its my mood ….sometimes i read and comment later .

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Truly…… Here I was minding my own business until your, what was that again, “amazingly well-written, life-changing post” dropped into my mail inbox. Now I have to change the way I look at all blogs and follow your advice to the letter!! 🙂 🙂

Although shitty, these pieces of advice do work in case you’re looking for a short term shoot-up in your number of followers.

Thanks. Funniest thing about this post is that it’s all true and it does work. Maybe stats don’t mean everything but say, for a school student doing a project on blogging, some quick likes and follows can do the trick so that needs to be considered too.

“Wow, this post is so amazingly well written. It changed my life…….. 😉
The giveaway is when you publish a post and get a like within a nano-second. You know they haven’t had time to read it. I only follow blogs I look forward to seeing in my reader. I also like/comment genuinely, because that’s how I’d hope others would treat my blog. But like all social media, stats and hits stroke the shallow ego. It’s a shame that some people need that. I really did like this post and really did think it funny 😉

I’ll tell you, the most annoying thing to me is the stalker comment likes. I won’t be following those at all. But at the end of it blog hopping is a pretty good way to meet bloggers and bet some really good ideas…. 😉

It’s nice to have “Likes”, but they don’t do much (if anything) to my online ego. Comments are what I am all about.
As funny as this post was for me, it was also very sad, because like you said – these things actually work.
We live in an era, in which the amount of followers is crucial. The more of them you have, the better your chances of going viral/ getting sponsors. So I get that aspect of it. But that is totally not how I roll. If everyone has hundreds of thousands followers, how much content is really being seen? There’s a higher chance your post will not be seen because your followers also follow a million other people. There’s a higher chance you won’t see anything interesting in your feed, because there a million posts a minute jumping out at you.
Now I’m going to go and like this post.
LikeLiked by 5 people
I don’t feel these things are sincere. I would rather give constructive criticism that just claim that a post changed my life. I think they’d see through the lie.

I found that when I won “Mystery Blogger” award and some other award that all these people viewed my blog. Ironic. I write myself for myself as a journal which is the definition of a blogger online: journal of memories, current and past. I was disappointed thought that not many bloggers like to answer award questions. When I was nominated I took it seriously. I don’t think I will do that again. I prefer to be anonymously happy.
LikeLiked by 4 people
The problem with award posts is that they’re not really awards, they’re just a chain mail. What kind of award involves a nominated person further nominating 15-16 winners?
If you win an award for a writing contest or something, even if that’s purely online, that’s much more rewarding.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Good point. Initially, I thought wow that is nice as I see many other bloggers think the same, so I responded to answering the questions and passing the pot to other bloggers. Oh well, anything you write…you learn a little bit more ….at least I wasn’t scammed in a harmful way. Writing is never lethal.

Quite true. If people like your post without reading, it shouldn’t bother you, at least you’re getting some recognition. It is their loss that they didn’t read it.

And i do remember your ‘congratulations!well deserved thing’ 😁 Damn.. that was a cool trick then, you decoded now, in this post😉. Though.., for me, contents and a little bit of interactions(conversations) in coment section matters!! At the end.. quality matters and not quantity! 😇
LikeLiked by 4 people
Damn, seems like I’ll have to be careful before commenting on your award posts from now on. 😉
Interactions do matter and in the end, those are the things that keep us interested in the world of blogging, don’t you think? If you write something thinking that a bunch of people will read it and interact with you, and then no one does, would you remain equally enthusiastic about it?
LikeLiked by 2 people
Oh no no..!! 😂 You can exactly use the same phrase all over again! And again! No issues, not at all.😉 ☺️
Exactly.. that’s what i meant too. Infact i do try to engage with the authors, it’s more vivid to converse, than to just read and leave a like or follow!
Yeah off course, if somebody is putting his/her time and efforts to read through my write-ups, then certainly that feels awesome! But about, enthusiastic part..?!?! to be honest, likes-comment-follow do not propell/motivate me to write more.My writing kinda works on if i am confidently ready to express and pour my thoughts in words or not!!

That’s a pretty swell thing. As for me, as long as the number of readers is a positive whole number, I am happy. The more the merrier.

Hahaha.. !! Well i have few ‘active’ followers, they have never read/liked/commented for any of my posts! May be they are happy with, ‘the more the merrier’ thing.😋. And there it doesn’t not matter for me!

You know what.. I know these hacks. Hahahaha I liked yours post but I read it too and now I’m writing a comment also. You you mind if I like someone’s comment on your post???
Oh but still I will not get any follower..🙂
But still I’m happy.

As I mentioned in one of the comments above, posts should be judged by their literary merit, not by the number of likes on them.

LikeLiked by 3 people
Yes. That’s only if you like a lot of posts in quick succession. After that, when you like a post, it will stay “liked” for a couple of seconds before reverting to the original status.

Hehe. Jokes apart, I find that people do these things a lot but I just can’t bring myself to do them. I mean, I can’t ‘like’ a post if I think it’s crap. I can’t shower fake praise on people. I just can’t. Maybe that explains why I have less than 150 followers after a year and a half of blogging.
